Australia's rapid population growth is intensifying pressure on every aspect of our lives, including – housing, traffic, health services, water supplies, green space, recreation spaces, natural habitats for wildlife (e.g. koalas), and more.
It is an irrefutable fact that most of this population growth is due to extremely high levels of immigration, which have accounted for around 80% of total expansion over the past two years. It is an irrefutable fact that most of this population growth is due to extremely high levels of immigration, which have accounted for around 80% of total expansion over the past two years. Despite the many billions of dollars being spent on infrastructure, it is still unable to catch up to the demands of this rapidly growing population.
When in opposition, Anthony Albanese suggested that Australia needed a ‘mature debate’ on population. Yet once elected in 2022 the Albanese government oversaw a massive hike in net migration, totalling around 1.3 million in the three years since gaining office. That is well over 400,000 per year, double the already-high annual immigration levels before COVID, and six times what it used to be prior to 2004!
Numerous opinion polls show the overwhelming majority of Australians (70% or more) do not want more population growth. Yet the government has not consulted or had a ‘mature debate’ with the Australian people.
We must stabilise our population so infrastructure can catch up, and support the regeneration of Australia’s damaged environment and biodiversity.
Please support the call by environmental advocacy group Sustainable Population Australia, to stabilise Australia’s population below 30 million and reduce net migration to 70,000 per year.
