It is time to send a clear message to our policy makers, “Australians say NO to a Big Australia!”

Australia is facing a crisis in the affordability and quality of housing which is leading to increased inequality and homelessness, threatening to shatter the social contract. We have among the worst housing affordability and household debt levels in the OECD, with 640,000 Australians living in housing stress conditions. According to one news report, “The rental crisis in Australia is so bad it's become the real estate version of The Hunger Games.”

It is time to send a clear message to our policy makers, “Australians say NO to a Big Australia!”

Australia is facing a crisis in the affordability and quality of housing which is leading to increased inequality and homelessness, threatening to shatter the social contract. We have among the worst housing affordability and household debt levels in the OECD, with 640,000 Australians living in housing stress conditions. According to one news report, “The rental crisis in Australia is so bad it's become the real estate version of The Hunger Games.”

Within this dire predicament, our federal government has committed to one of Australia's biggest population growth targets in recent history, adding 518,100 people through net migration in the 2022-23 financial year. This growth is already creating huge extra demand for housing and putting pressure on rents. Proposed reductions to immigration are nowhere near sufficient to stabilise population growth, and so the housing crisis remains locked in.

The connection between population growth – driven by high immigration – and high housing inflation is often ignored or denied in political circles. However, it is demand growth rather than supply constraints that has pushed up housing prices.

The majority of Australians are outraged and demanding leadership. Most also believe that our housing industry unfairly favours the big end of town. We need to give a loud and clear message to politicians that Australians are saying NO to a Big Australia!

I am concerned that Australia's rapid population growth is contributing to the housing crisis.

At a time when at least 640,000 Australians are experiencing housing stress, the current Federal government is committing to one of Australia’s largest population growth rates in recent history, adding 518,100 people through net migration in the 2022-23 financial year. Every additional person needs somewhere to live, exacerbating the housing emergency further.

When in opposition, Anthony Albanese suggested that Australia needed a ‘mature debate’ on population.   Polls on Australian attitudes toward population growth consistently show that most Australians are opposed to a Big Australia.   Yet, now it is in office, the Albanese government has committed to Big Australia without any consultation with the Australian public.  While some aspects of the recent migration reform package are welcome, the new government target of 250,000 per annum is even higher than the disastrous pre-Covid decade.

Housing is where population growth hurts ordinary people. The connection between population growth – driven by high immigration – and high housing inflation is too often ignored in political discussion.  It is demand growth rather than supply constraints that are pushing up housing prices, benefitting a few at the expense of the many. New migrants are also being affected by this housing insecurity.    Housing stress is threatening to shatter the social contract.

Please support lower migration rates which will stabilise Australia’s population and stop a headlong rush into Big Australia.
